A Foundation for Learning

The Urban Assembly Unison School prioritizes equity as a foundation for a transformative learning experience for all students. We believe true success comes from fostering an inclusive environment that honors individual experiences and identities. Through programs like Staff Circles, family engagement initiatives, and Advisory groups, we strive to address disparities, dismantle biases, and empower students to excel academically, thrive socially, and become leaders for social justice. Our commitment extends beyond the classroom, partnering with community organizations to create a truly equitable and just society.

Our Equity team consists of school leaders, teachers, and parents, working together on the initiatives below. Interested in getting involved? Learn about our Family Equity Working Group in the Unison Family Hub.

Initiatives

Here are a few initiatives that we have begun and others that you can expect from us moving forward as we continue to strive for equity and towards being an anti-racist school:

  • Open communication and transparency with parents and stakeholders is key to fostering equity. We uphold an open door policy, inviting families to visit or call at any time. We believe that active engagement between school and community fosters trust and strengthens our commitment to equity.

  • Culturally responsive education lies at the heart of our teaching approach. We celebrate diversity, recognize the importance of every student's background, and integrate culturally relevant content into our curriculum. Through inclusive practices and ongoing professional development, we empower our educators to create classrooms where all students feel seen, valued, and supported in their learning journey.

  • We prioritize equity-focused Professional Development for our teachers. Our staff engages in monthly equity circles where they examine and interrogate their identities, understanding their impact in the classroom. Through these circles, educators learn about diverse cultures and identities, practicing ways to affirm and protect the identities of all students, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for everyone.

  • We actively engage with families and the community through tailored workshops designed to meet their specific requests and needs. From facilitating family and staff book clubs to hosting discussion groups, we create spaces for meaningful dialogue and capacity-building around diversity, equity, and inclusion. By fostering collaboration and mutual understanding, we strengthen our collective commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all.

  • We prioritize restorative practices as a cornerstone of conflict resolution. Rather than punitive measures, we believe in fostering understanding, accountability, and healing within our community. Through restorative circles and dialogue, we empower individuals to address conflicts constructively, repair harm, and build stronger relationships. By promoting empathy and reconciliation, we cultivate a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
