High School Application Process

All Unison 8th graders receive specialized support in applying to high schools from their Advisors.  The Advisory class includes lessons on how to read the High School Directory, how to set up the MySchools account, and how to make wise decisions about high schools of interest.  The Advisors work closely with families and students to ensure that this process goes smoothly.

Timeline

  • Spring of 7th Grade - 7th graders visit high schools in 7th grade to begin to think about high school choices

  • Fall of 8th Grade - Advisors begin lessons on the High School Application process during Advisory

  • September - October - Students can register for the Specialized High School Test (SHSAT) in MySchools.  Principal Emily Paige works with Advisors to ensure all students who are interested in registering are able to register.

  • Typically, applications are due by early December.

Connecting with School-based and District-level Groups

Here is a list of school-based and district-level groups you and your children can join to keep you close to your school communities and empower you to help make decisions about the direction of your children’s education and school life.

  • Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is the official organization of the parent body in a school and can support schools with parent engagement and school enrichment.

  • School Leadership Team. The School Leadership Team (SLT) is a group of people who develop educational policies for their school. A key role for SLT’s is to develop the School Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP), https://www.schools.nyc.gov/getinvolved/families/school-leadershipteam/comprehensive-education-plans

  • Title I Parent Advisory Councils (PACs). All DOE schools classified as Title I programs under the federal Every Student Succeeds Acts are required to establish a Title I Parent Advisory Council (PAC) that will serve as the consultative and representative body to involve and engage all Title I parents of participating students in the Title I program.

  • District 13 Community Education Council. Meetings and more information can be found here: https://www.cec13brooklyn.org/
